Colin Rea: Marlins sending Colin Rea back to the Padres
Miami had jumped out early in an 11-0 rout of the St. Louis Cardinals, so Rea’s exit had no bearing on the game.

The Padres on Monday re-acquired Colin Rea from Miami after the right-hander injured his throwing arm in his first start for the Marlins.
Rea is a candidate for elbow surgery, depending on the severity of his injury. In return, San Diego sent back pitching prospect Luis Castillo, who was part of the original, seven-player trade that shipped Rea across the country.
The deal still looks pretty good for San Diego: Cashner for Capps, Jarred Cosart, and Josh Naylor. This news may indicate that the elbow injury is worse than originally feared, and possibly that there was some clause in the trade that allowed the Marlins to rework the deal if either player suffered an injury.
At the Major League Baseball trade deadline, we don’t often think about return policies.
The two teams play a three-game series in Miami starting Friday, August 26. That’s a new one.
Rea, a Cascade native, was acquired by the Marlins on Friday along with right-hander Andrew Cashner and made his debut Saturday night.

Now, however, Rea is returning to San Diego while on the DL.
