College coaches, players discuss upcoming season during Big 12 Media Days

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby speaks to the media Monday during the opening of Big 12 media days in Dallas.

In 2014, both one-loss teams TCU and Baylor were left out of the Playoff in favor of Ohio State, who played and won a conference championship game.

Bowlsby said decisions on expansion are entirely up to the league’s presidents. Eight presidents would need to vote in favor of expansion to get the green light.

The Big 12 will limit in-season live contact opportunities for the league’s football players to no more than two times per week, the conference announced Monday.

Bowlsby was grilled on whether such a unilateral policy puts the Big 12 at a competitive disadvantage.

The Buckeyes of the Big Ten went on to win the National Championship while the Big 12 watched from home. We think that gives us a full array of options.

Much like the Big XII Conference in the first College Football Playoff, it looks like Big XII fans hoping for expansion will also be shutout.

“Whether we end up with a championship game down the road or not, we aren’t going to have one this year”, Bowlsby said.

Coaches contacted by Bruce Feldmand of FOX Sports believe that most programs have already voluntarily limited the number of full-contact practices during the season, so the change likely won’t have a great deal of impact on the Longhorns or any other conference schools.

Bowlsby said that the conference hasn’t had any talks about the issue, but he thinks “it’s something that we’ll talk about”. It only makes sense to ditch the old motto considering the Big 12 had two champions a year ago, but I’m not sure the new one works all that well, either. “We think that, properly managed, those kinds of celebrations can be a lot of fun”. That is one less than the NCAA rule of three a week.

— The SEC has passed a rule barring its schools from signing any athlete disciplined at another college stop for serious offenses such as sexual assault, domestic violence or other forms of sexual violence.

“What we determined is that our [coaches] weren’t using them anyway”, Bowlsby said.
