College football: How the top 25 fared

The Terrapins entered Saturday’s game against No. 1 Ohio State with a 2-3 record.

Oklahoma vs Texas 2015 (live score results below) is approaching halftime in today’s AP Top 25 College Football game. When beating Illinois improves you to 6-0 and you’ve got wins over Pitt and Wisconsin, most certainly. And over the weekend, Utah beat previously undefeated Cal, which went into that game ranked No.23. For instance, they courteously limited Leonard Fournette to 158 yards rushing and one polite TD. They’ll face LSU next in the premier matchup of the week. They still have very good teams on their schedule to prove themselves and I am still not convinced by others in the conference such as University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), Georgia, and Louisiana State University (LSU). They finished off Kansas State in another high-scoring dogfight and will be on the road in Ames this week – the city, not the department store. They had to call upon the winning DNA in their veins, and it was a testament to their competitive chops that the 2014 Seminoles did go 13-0 in the 2014 regular season.

So, what a better way for Randy Edsall to enjoy his potentially last game in the Big Ten than to be playing in the Shoe and most likely getting blasted? Goff’s fourth-down pass left his right hand, and already this maddest of sports had struck again, 24 days before the playoff selection committee will issue its first findings, which might go something along the lines of, “We quit”. This is a great test for both teams as Michigan hasn’t played anyone of note since losing to Utah in Week 1 while Northwestern has played good defenses but is failing to put anyone away. But now, I’m not so sure, not after MSU had close games against Purdue and Rutgers. (What a country.) North Texas lost 66-7 to Portland State, the worst FBS-to-FCS loss in our national history, and on homecoming day, so it fired its coach immediately.

Stanford was off this week but moved up a spot to #15. They’ll host UCLA this week with a chance to seize a few serious momentum in the Pac 12 race.

The Buckeyes and the Bears eventually will get to the meat of their schedules, but for now, they can’t match the accomplishments of teams like Clemson, Northwestern and Notre Dame. If they beat Michigan State at home this week, I’ll start taking them a lot more seriously. With a 33-26 overtime win at West Virginia, the Cowboys are undefeated.

Next up: Michigan State, who’s owned the Wolverines like no other team – not even the Buckeyes – since Mark Dantonio’s arrival.

Arizona State – After sitting idle, they’ll travel to Utah with a chance to play spoiler for the Utes’ playoff aspirations. He’s No. 1 this week, and if you feel like arguing with him, be warned.

New to the top 25: Memphis and Toledo.

Cal – Hung tough with Utah, which was enough to keep them in the Top 25.

Boise State – Since a low-scoring win against Washington and a close loss to BYU in the first two weeks, the Broncs have gone 4-0 while outscoring their opponents 204-24.

Ohio State fans can fret about late November wins. After the Halloween games, the committee will meet and announce its first rankings on November 3. But overall, in person, down on the field, Michigan has been more impressive than MSU, even with the loss.

No one should expect Ohio State, Florida State, and Michigan State to breeze through the remaining portions of their seasons without incident or difficulty.
