(Colo.)-Ponder Helps 49ers To 31-24 Exhibition Win Over Broncos

This is Paxton Lynch’s job, and whoever has it in the meantime is simply keeping the seat warm.

I can’t imagine the Bronco starting offensive unit being introduced individually in prime time on September 8 (which it won’t be) and having Mark Sanchez running onto the field, hopping and skipping and happily raising his arms to his adoring fans.

Perhaps the most intriguing game of Saturday’s exhibition schedule was in Denver with both the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos trying to figure out who will start at quarterback.

Sanchez is battling Trevor Siemian for the starting quarterback job for the defending world champions.

Kaepernick hasn’t thrown in team drills since last Wednesday, the result of what he initially called a tight shoulder but the team has since classified as a exhausted arm. Siemien completed 10-of-14 passes for 75 yards, but he threw a pick-six to San Francisco safety Eric Reid in the second quarter.

Kubiak needs a consistent leader on the field to give Lynch the baptism of fire.

“I’m an athlete. I can play right tackle or anywhere on the line”, Davis said. “I told him I can’t put the team in a situation like that”.

The San Francisco 49ers offensive starters finished off their Week 2 after three series. I look at myself. That’s the way I look at things first.

I think this is the week for Harold. We all take responsibility for it.

“He helped us get to where we wanted to those two years in a row”, Revis said. If they can get to a good start to the season, it will make it easier down the road.

The 29-year-old Sanchez, who trudged from NY to Philadelphia to Denver by showing ability and then, immediately after, a knack for awful decision-making, got his shot to solidify the job that should be his if experience counts for anything. He is a terrific leader and he has played well at times.

If there is one thing you can count on as a Bronco fan, it’s that-when healthy-C.J. “That’s really too bad”.

Kubiak planned to use Saturday’s game to finally settle on a starter.

Still, the first-team offense eventually got on track with Blaine Gabbert hooking up with the guy who’s become a favorite target, tight end Vance McDonald, three times for 38 yards. Sanchez played extremely great from with 9-of-10 from the start but had two fumbles before halftime that could derail his chances of getting the job. But his interception on the third possession, then Sanchez’s two fumbles late in the first half and Lynch’s interception in the second half, set them all back to square one. He also saw Trevor Siemian throwing a costly pass that missed the hands of intended receiver, Demaryius Thomas. He did some really good stuff [Saturday night]. If you want to take the 49ers then make your bet at Bovada and get that big point. I think I’ve continued to tell you guys that he is behind the others from a knowledge standpoint as far as running the group. We need to keep him coming, keep bringing him along.

He also let it be known he couldn’t promise. “That’s the plan, to see if he can, so that he’s a full go to get ready to play the following week”. Nearly every piece I have seen has said that the Broncos will be worse. That isn’t a huge surprise as the Patriots are one of the most tight-lipped franchises in all of sports and Bill Belichick throws around health updates like he would compliments.
