Colon, Scherzer, Saunders, Belt added to All-Star rosters

In spring training, the Mets looked at Colon as little more than a stopgap until Zack Wheeler returned from Tommy John surgery.

With Bumgarner’s departure, the Giants now have two respresentatives in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in San Diego, CA.,–catcher Buster Posey, who is a starter, and pitcher Johnny Cueto. He’s not fazed by rain delays; he’s not fazed by being pushed back. It surprised me a lot. “I think people are excited about it”, Collins said.

Bartolo Colon has taken the ball each time he’s been assigned to pitch and posted a 3.28 ERA on the strength of an 89- to 91-mph fastball loaded with movement.

This year will be Colon’s first as a member of the National League. Not bad for a 43 year old. Colon hasn’t finished a season with a sub-4.00 ERA since his 2013 A’s campaign that was somewhat clouded by the Biogenesis scandal, although he wasn’t suspended but merely tied to the widespread performance-enhancing drugs operation. Colon turned down guaranteed starting jobs from other teams to return.

It also helped Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, even Matt Harvey, to have the cagey veteran around to show them how to be successful in the majors. Juan Marichal is first with 243 wins.

The overall results are the best of Colon’s Mets career thus far. He doesn’t get too emotional, he’s gonna go do what he does.

“When we talk about his influence on the young pitchers, it’s the same thing. There’s a lot of great ballplayers around the league, and I wasn’t expecting this”.
