Colon To Stay With Mets

The Mets have agreed to terms with the 42-year-old veteran on a one-year deal worth $7.25 million, as per Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Colon pitched entirely in a relief role during the postseason.

Having Colon on the roster also provides the Mets with a proven starter in case they want to give starters days off down the stretch like they did this past year.

Before the Mets traded Jon Niese for Neil Walker last Wednesday afternoon, assistant GM John Ricco said that the club was open to bringing Colon back. Colon won a game in the 2015 NLCS against the Chicago Cubs pitching in relief; his first playoff win in 14 years when he was a member of the Cleveland Indians back in 2001.

The Mets also indicated a desire to limit the workload on their quartet of young pitchers after the bulk of them shouldered career-high innings totals in leading the Mets to the National League pennant.

NY will have Colon, Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz and Zack Wheeler at their disposal next season.

If the Mets are 100 percent healthy, Colon will serve as a bridge to Wheeler.

Colon, who turns 43 in May, was a free agent after his two-year, $20 million contract with the Mets expired. And on a one-year deal, there is very little risk involved.
