When deputies arrived, they did all they could to save the woman’s life, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Jefferson County Animal Control is now housing the dogs as officers investigate the circumstances of the attack.

Deputies responded to the 31000 block of Black Widow Drive about 7 p.m. after dispatchers received a 911 call from Richard Shawl reporting the mauling, said Dionne Waugh, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

Neighbors say the woman and her family kept to themselves. The dogs belonged to the victims and they attacked inside their home.

The two dogs were found running around outside the home.

The name and ages of the woman and her son have not been released.

Authorities don’t know what prompted the attack, the sheriff’s office said.
