Colts owner picks up Ringo Starr’s drum set at auction

He has reunited the Beatles, sort of.

A drum kit played by Beatle Ringo Starr on some of the Fab Four’s greatest hits has been snapped up at auction by the owner of the Indianapolis Colts NFL team for an eye watering $2.2m (£1.4m).

Irsay owns prominent guitars from the group’s other three members – Paul McCartney, the late George Harrison and the late John Lennon.

Meanwhile, Irsay soon could be giving his head coach and/or G.M. the Pete Best treatment.

Starr is auctioning memorabilia to raise cash for his charity The 1963 Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl drum kit was used at over 200 shows within the sixties after Starr took possession of it on 12 May, 1963.

The two-day auction, which began on Thursday, included more than 800 items owned by Starr and his wife, actress Barbara Bach.

A drum kit Ringo Starr used to record some of the Beatles’ early hits has sold for US$2.2 million (RM9.3 million) at a Beverly Hills auction.

Mr Irsay, a known collector and huge music fan, also owns famous guitars played by Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton and has 175 classic guitars in his collection.

The mono pressing was the very first in the United Kingdom of the 1968 album. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the couple’s Lotus Children Foundation.
