Relay for Life begins at 6 p.m. on Friday with the survivor lap and continues until early Saturday morning at the CCMS track. Schools in the county have also held individual relay events to support the cause.

People can donate to Relay for Life through August 31, Anderson said.

A luminaria ceremony will be held at 10 p.m.to honor those who lost the fight against cancer. The passing of the torch is pretty awesome; I love to see another survivor up here.

Lawrence M. Caufield, a retired. With treatments and the help of a cancer support group, her friends, and her dad, she managed to go into remission.

He said a few of his friends were also battling cancer so some students made a decision to start up a relay team. “He fought a good fight and he lost his battle”. During the event, each team has at least one team member on the track at all times and, prior to the event, participates in fundraising during the months leading up to the event.

There will be a wealth of fun activities on offer including live music from local bands, Zumba, charity stalls, vehicle wash, cake and candy, tombolas, raffles, and for the first time this year a huge 50ft long inflatable assault course. And ironically, Dr. Klatt himself died from cancer in 2015. “He was only 51 and I was 11 at the time”, Mr. Caufield said. This is quite relevant as the number of cancer survivors has been climbing.

“If we didn’t have our family and didn’t have God, I don’t know where we would be today”, said Christy.

Accept the baton and join the fight against cancer. “I have no idea what that is”, Anderson said. “As Nicole mentioned, it is just one huge family and it is not just this night but throughout the entire year”.

Each year, more than four million people in over 20 countries take part in the Relay for Life to raise much-needed funds and create awareness to save lives from cancer. And like Mr. Caufield, as Mr. Sovie remembered his sister, tears ran down his cheeks.

Over 200 people have registered to join the many teams signed up for the local event.

First year Co-chair Theresa Vonnahme says the day will also feature attractions for the kids and some for the whole family.

“It just kind of hits you when you look at the names and you look at the pictures”, Yates said. Relay for Life is our community’s opportunity to help save lives from cancer by taking our message to more people and raising more dollars to fund the fight.
