Comcast starts rolling out blazing-fast Gigabit Internet
Comcast was able to successfully install the company’s first DOCSIS 3.1 modem in Philadelphia, and then in Atlanta a few days later.

Comcast said new and current customers in Atlanta can visit Xfinity.com/gig to learn about the new gigabit service and to request additional information on the trial as the service becomes more broadly available. Comcast has been testing usage-based broadband policies in several markets, including Atlanta, but has not announced if it intends to make it a company-wide, commercial policy.
Those who do decide that a contract isn’t for them can pay a $35 per month fee on top of the $140 price point to unlock unlimited downloads.
However, for participants in the trial program who will not be signing the three-year contract, Comcast will throttle them after they reach the data cap of 300 GB per month. Mediacom began launching residential gigabit service in 2015 and has been offering the speeds to commercial businesses since 2006.
Comcast is mailing this flyer to Atlanta residents. The company’s announcement today described the Atlanta deployment as a trial in “a number of neighborhoods”, with customers being encouraged to offer feedback about the service.
In other news CNET reported, “It marks the first city that the nation’s largest cable provider will offer a gigabit connection”.
Comcast has announced that they are beginning to rollout 1 gigabit-per-second Internet speeds to residential and business custom in the Atlanta area. Google, which was first to market with a gigabit service in Kansas City, charges $70 for its gigabit broadband service. And it gets worse: if you don’t commit to that contract, you’ll have to accept a 300GB monthly data cap that’s trivially low for the speed.

“Our Atlanta customers will be among the first in the world to enjoy this new Gigabit technology, and we’re looking forward to learning more from these early adopters about how they take advantage of these ultra-fast speeds”, said Comcast Central Division President Bill Connors.
