Comeback Cutler is changing the narrative

Bears tight end Zach Miller reels in the winning touchdown in the Bears’ 22-19 win over the Chargers on November 9th.

He passed Jim McMahon with the most wins as a Bear QB at 47.

Until reserve tight end Zach Miller stole the show with his game-winning touchdown grab, the nation was buzzing over Langford’s second-quarter, 31-yard diving catch. Adrian Amos and Tracy Porter were both really strong, though I think we’re seeing why Alan Ball has had a hard time seeing the field over Bryce Callahan (both a missed tackle and that he’s more an outside guy, not inside).

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler broke the franchise record for touchdown passes when he found Martellus Bennett for a 1-yard score at San Diego. The Bears are now 3-5, with their two consecutive losses before this game being by just 3 points each, and overall there’s a feeling that with a couple of things going their way they could be in a very different place right now.

Cutler has done a nice job of protecting the football this season, but the veteran quarterback turned the ball over twice in the first half.

“It will also probably go down as the catch of the year”, Business Insider reporter Corke Gaines wrote of the impressive catch. Langford also caught a few passes for 70 yards, while Alshon Jeffery had another huge day with 10 receptions and 151 yards. “I just had to go get it and after that I went unconscious”.

“It’s just the start of knowing what he can do”, outside linebacker Pernell McPhee said. Cutler makes killer mistakes and people make excuses for him. San Diego got on the board in the first quarter with a 14-yard TD pass from Philip Rivers to Danny Woodhead. You have to play your best in the fourth quarter, and that’s what coach (John) Fox has talked about.

But much more important to his future as an National Football League quarterback, he should have convinced Chicago’s coaches and officials he needs to be entrenched as their starter for 2016. Early in the 1st half they looked to out of sync with the Chargers and their up tempo offense.

Cutler lost a fumble on a sack and then made an offthe mark throw to Jeffery, which second-year cornerback Jason Verrett intercepted and returned 68 yards for a 13-0 lead.

Coach Mike Zimmer said he believes Bridgewater “will be good to go” when the Vikings play at Oakland this weekend.

Sure, the Bears are devoid of talent throughout their roster, but they do have Cutler, who has made everyone better.

The Chargers entered 2015 with a good team on paper, but they needed to stay healthy. The Chargers only scored one more field goal the rest of the way; with the Bears defense adjusting to the short routes and stops, the Bears offense had to go to work, and it did.

“Every game we’ve been in, there have been plays where we could control the outcome, and we haven’t made those plays”, Rivers said. It was Verrett’s first touchdown and second interception of his career off Cutler’s second turnover of the first half.
