Comeback is McIlroy’s biggest on PGA Tour

Behind a final-round, 6-under-par 65, Rory McIlroy captured his second Deutsche Bank Championship today at TPC Boston, topping the field with a score of 15-under 269.

He produced a final round of 65 to finish on 15-under-par, overtaking England’s overnight leader Paul Casey, who finished two-shots behind.

It was 27-year-old McIlroy’s first tournament win since the Irish Open in May and first PGA title since May 2015. Nine of the last 10 players with exactly a three-shot lead after 54 holes on the PGA Tour did not win. “Just went with the momentum, and just really proud of myself that I was able to keep that momentum going, keep the same thought and not get negative if I did hit a bad putt, just really kept staying positive the whole way throughout the weekend”.

McIlroy will rise 34 places to fourth in the FedEx Cup standings – and nearer the $10m (£7.52m) prize for the victor – as a result of his victory.

This latest victory was unlikely on a number of counts, given he laboured in his first round on Friday and was four-over through only three holes.

Jimmy Walker was third on 12 under, with Adam Scott a shot further back ahead of Patrick Reed, Fabian Gomez and James Hahn, who tied for fifth on 10 under.

Rose’s round collapsed on the back nine, when two triple bogeys left him in a tie for 57th place.

Playoff title When McIlroy last won the Deutsche Bank championship in 2012, he brought that momentum with him to also claim the BMW championship the following week before being usurped by Brandt Snedeker in the Tour Championship and also for the megabucks bonus.

The Deutsche Bank Championship is the second of the four that make up the season-ending FedEx Cup.

“It feels comfortable but as I said, it’s still a work in progress”.
