‘So many amusing things happen when you’re in there and, looking back, you do have a right laugh with the nurses, ‘ she said. Working at Piccadilly Radio as a receptionist, she began to develop one of her most famous creations, Mrs. Merton, as part of Chris Sievey’s Frank Sidebottom show on the station.

Our thoughts and hearts are with Caroline Aherne’s family during this hard time.

Tributes and memories have been shared following the death of northern comedian Caroline Aherne famed for her Mrs Merton character and The Royale Family sitcom.

Mr Kessler said the much-loved comedy writer and actress had an “enormous natural intellect but not a great deal in the way of formal education”.

“I don’t see anyone else doing what she did and I do think there is a noticeable gap left in Caroline’s wake”.

Her hair, beneath her wig, had regrown, she was painfully thin, but despite all this, she was on incredible form, the Caroline I knew and loved working with.

‘A true professional and one of the most generous people I ever worked with’.

“She must have gone through a lot, but I never saw her looking unwell”. She had a cameo playing my wife Sheila, who I serenaded with the Smiths’ classic Sheila Take a Bow.

“I have lost a attractive sister and the world has lost an unbelievable talent”.

“She explained to me She didn’t really like awards events but had to collect the “Les”, as she was such a massive fan and especially as it was given to her in Manchester”.

Aherne was nominated for BAFTAs for her performances in both Mrs Merton and The Royle Family, as well as for her directing in the sitcom in 2001. She was absolutely wonderful and awesome to work for. “She left on her own”, a relative said. I’ll miss her supportive texts when I write new things. Caroline played dizzy Denise in the show, a brown lip liner-loving, tracksuit wearing sweetheart who made us laugh until we cried. It was a baking hot day and I was wearing shorts, and she looked at my legs and said, “that reminds me, I must get some chicken drumsticks”. “We lost one of the good ones”, he added.
