Comedy Central Lawyers: Stephen Colbert Can’t Be ‘Colbert’ on CBS
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce that, thanks to corporate lawyers, the character of Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, will never be seen again”, Colbert told his audience on Wednesday, to loud boos.

Since starting at the “Late Show” last fall, Colbert has struggled to establish himself with his own personality. “And as much as I’d like to have that guy on again, I can’t”. I can not reasonably argue I own my face or name.
Nostalgic late-show viewers were pleased last week with the return of Jon Stewart, and the return of Stephen Colbert’s Colbert Report alter-ego to The Late Show, but not everyone was happy with the return of the conservative caricature.
Not only was the third Colbert introduced live via satellite from Philadelphia in his “first appearance on TV ever”, but The Late Show host also introduced a new segment “The Werd” – which bares a striking resemblance to the favorite Colbert Report segment “The Word”. So instead he had on his “identical cousin” Stephen Colbert, wearing an American flag button-down and his signature cocked eyebrow.
How did Colbert react to his old character’s death?
The Top 10 list remained a staple of Letterman’s show until he retired past year.
“Immediately after that show, CBS” top lawyer was contacted by the top lawyer from another company to say that the character Stephen Colbert is their intellectual property”, Colbert said on Late Show Wednesday night.
Colbert broke down the now-formally nominated presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, and why their respective approval ratings are so low.

He said there was another option for dissatisfied voters this fall: “Write in Michelle”.
