Comey defends releasing FBI’s Clinton report before holiday weekend

The FBI in July closed the agency’s yearlong investigation into whether Clinton and her top aides mishandled classified information that flowed through the private email server located in the basement of her NY home.

Those occurred separately from the email deletions overseen by the former secretary of state’s legal team a year ago before she turned over 33,000 work-related messages to the State Department. And perhaps the Washington Post can remind us all of the punishments the White House handed down by the Obama administration after the IRS voluntarily held a press conference admitting they had unfairly scrutinized thousands of conservative political groups? Clinton says things that are false because, as this episode and many others demonstrate, she spends a lot of time trying to obscure what’s true.

Monica Hanley, a former Clinton aide, often purchased replacement BlackBerry devices for Clinton during her tenure at State.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said it was further proof that Clinton emails were wrongfully scrubbed from her private server.

Some of the Federal Bureau of Investigation questioning concerned a 2011 exchange in which Clinton directed one of her advisers, Jake Sullivan, to transmit a set of talking points and turn it “into nonpaper w/no identifying heading and send nonsecure”.

In addition, there were “mass deletions” of emails just after news reports of her secret private server became public, and after she received a subpoena, and order not to destroy any records, from the House committee investigating the Benghazi affair.

While Comey announced in June he would not recommend charging Clinton, he called her behavior “extremely careless”.

Clinton’s campaign dismissed Chaffetz’s outline of the email deletions as a “conspiracy theory” debunked by the FBI investigation.

Comey said he briefly considered holding the documents until after the Labor Day holiday, knowing that the Friday afternoon release would likely prompt criticism. Obviously people then would accuse them of politically going after Mrs. Clinton. Please see our terms of service for more information.

In his defense, Comey said he felt the documents needed to be released sooner rather than later to avoid “game-playing”. This is exactly why I have called for her to be denied access to classified information.

While the Justice Department asked Clinton’s attorneys at Williams & Connolly to turn over the 13 devices, the lawyers said in February that “they were unable to locate any of these devices”, according to the documents.

If you find you can’t vote for Trump, remember there will be other choices on the ballot.

In a statement about the newly disclosed email, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said, “The email does not change the facts that have previously been made clear about the Benghazi attacks”.
