‘Comfort Women’ Have Waited a Long Time for an Apology
Lin said there have been constant communications between Taiwan and Japan in order to resolve the comfort women issue. “This servility is more than a slap to our own comfort women who until now get no justice, it also reminds us how the Aquino family collaborated with Japan’s occupation of our country during the Second World War”, Ilagan said.

Just 46 surviving South Korean former “comfort women” are known to the government from an original number thought to be in the hundreds of thousands.
“While the agreement will mean better relations between the two governments, I still find it troubling that the views and feelings of the victims do not seem to have fully been taken into account”, Brazinsky said.
This issue has haunted the relationship between the two countries, even though they renewed bilateral ties in 1965.
South Korean “comfort women” and supporters vowed to step up protests against a deal between Seoul and Tokyo on resolving a long-running row over the comfort women.
Following the historic deal, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Japan to promptly launch bilateral negotiations on the comfort women issue in order to compensate victims in Taiwan.
One of the women said Monday that she would accept the deal reluctantly because she knew the South Korean government made efforts to settle the issue. Abe directly apologized twice via a statement by the foreign minister and in a phone call with President Park Geun-hye of South Korea. After the agreement has been announced in Seoul, Abe stated, “We must not let this problem drag on into the next generation”.
But it has faced growing pressure from its major military ally the USA to improve ties with fellow United States ally Japan, in the face of an expansionist China and nuclear-armed North Korea.
“The comfort women issue is one of the earlier examples of mass performed human trafficking organized by a military and government”, Jung-shil Lee, an art history professor at the Corcoran College of Art and Design and the vice president of the Washington Coalition for Comfort Women, said previous year, when the memorial to the Comfort Women was erected on the grounds of the Fairfax County government center. “What kind of agreement is that?” she said.

But the apology and compensation come with the condition that the South Korean government promise not to raise this instance of rape and sexual trafficking in other world forums. The protesters demanded a direct apology from the Japanese leader and legal compensation for the suffering of the victims.
