Comments about judge ‘misconstrued’

On Tuesday, Republicans were squirming over what might have been the billionaire’s most incendiary stance to date – the claim that Curiel couldn’t preside fairly over the Trump University case because the USA -born judge is of Mexican heritage and Trump wants to build a wall between the US and Mexico. Judge Curiel was born in Indiana.

Trump said at the conclusion of the statement that he doesn’t intend to comment “on this matter any further”.

Now they are in contortions trying to distance themselves from his latest howler, which Speaker Paul Ryan called “the textbook definition of a racist comment.”

But despite his harsh words for the presumptive candidate, he stopped short of disavowing Trump himself. That’s wrong. “We have more likelihood of getting our policies enacted with [Trump] than with [Clinton]”, he said”.

Trump said in a statement Tuesday he does not believe Curiel’s heritage makes him incapable of being impartial, but he said his questioning of Curiel’s impartiality was “fair”.

Former rival Jeb Bush implied Trump’s statement was lacking, tweeting: “Donald Trump should retract his comments, not defend them”.

“He has within his fingertips the opportunity to pivot, to move to the general election”, he said.
