Community celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

“We’ve come a long way in the city of Austin”, Joe Deshotel, Communications Director for the Travis County Democratic Party said, “from a city less than a hundred years ago that was forced segregation across the city”.

Large crowds gathered in downtown Lake Charles on Monday to watch the 32nd annual Martin Luther King Jr.

“Y’all, we can’t keep being distracted, because if you’re not careful, we’re about to allow a reality show host to bully himself into becoming president of the United States of America”, she said.

Wright is a Lake Charles resident who lived through the Civil Rights era.

Local families celebrated diversity during a series of activities offered in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

At the Statehouse, about 1,000 people assembled under chilly, sunny skies to mark the 30th anniversary of the federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader, who was killed in 1968.

In Minneapolis, activists for the Black Lives Matter movement planned a march over a Mississippi River bridge connecting Minneapolis and St. Paul during a Martin Luther King Day rally.

Dozens got on board the Celebration Train from San Jose to San Francisco to make the 54-mile birthday tribute to Dr. King and march to the Yerba Buena Arts Center.

Castro said the work continues and the statistics are “unacceptable”.

“Dr. King said change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability but comes through continuous struggle and that struggle is ours it is all of ours”, said O’Malley.

Richmond said he was a product of that dream.

In a nation where we’re constantly reminded how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go; Charles Spratt pushes the importance of keeping the youth involved.

“Martin Luther King was a pioneer, you know, just like Rosa Parks”, said David Smith. He was only 39-years-old.

“Painting things that are meant to inspire and meant to brighten up a student’s day and have them think about the future and what they can achieve”, said Senator Baldwin.
