Conan O’Brien remembers his best late-night moments with David Bowie

A handful of David Bowie’s musician friends and admirers announced a tribute concert to the legendary rock star and style icon just hours before he died from cancer Sunday. “RIP David Bowie”, with Australian actor Russell Crowe also paying tribute. “It was then that I realized that it may be the last time I would see him”.

“When someone that great passes, I just lament that I didn’t have that opportunity”.

Yet Bowie, intensely private when not performing, the ultimate showman when he was, had used his music to provide every possible clue that he was about the leave the stage.

“I am a huge David Bowie fan, not just for his music but for his pioneering spirit”, he said.

Bowie, whose hits included “Fame”, “Heroes” and “Let’s Dance”, died “peacefully” and was surrounded by family, representative Steve Martin said early Monday.

A David Bowie biographer is also making public claims about Bowie’s health issues, telling BBC News the musician “had six heart attacks in recent years”, adding she obtained this information “from somebody very close to him”.

In the Underground, one board read: “I don’t know where I’m going from here but I promise it won’t be boring”.

“She took the time to think about the ramifications”, her manager Ray Santilli said.

It is believed Bowie learned he was dying over a year ago and went into overdrive recording his 25th and final album, Blackstar.

She followed up with more reposts celebrating his 69th birthday and the release of his last album, Blackstar.

As an alien in The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) or scientist Nikola Tesla in The Prestige (2006), Bowie embraced the eccentric in films as well. “He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life”.

Bowie was married twice, to actress and model Mary Angela “Angie” Barnett from 1970-80, and to supermodel Iman since 1992. Music writer Graeme Thomson captured the shock felt by many: “We were so thrilled to have him back, we failed to notice he was saying goodbye”, he tweeted.

“Saddened to hear David Bowie has lost his battle with cancer – his music was an inspiration to many”, tweeted British astronaut Tim Peake, traveling aboard the ISS. “I mean it’s…you don’t often actually get an artist that really engenders that with so many people, across so many generations”.
