Concerned over anti-India sentiments in Nepal: Indian envoy

India made the assertion on the second Universal Periodic Review (UPR), half of the Interactive Dialogue on the twenty third Session of the UPR Working Group on the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva on Wednesday. We urge the Government of Nepal to investigate and take credible measures to prevent their recurrence.

He said more than 200 trucks and other vehicles had crossed from Birgunj in Nepal to Raxaul in India and more were lining up.

One report said the police raided the protesters’ camp early on Monday when they were still sleeping, removed their tents, and lined up the trucks to leave Nepal.

Facing a fuel crisis, Nepal today requested China to open more border points for trade when the customs officials of the two countries met here today. Nepal Oil Corporation and National United Oil (PetroChina) signed an MoU for the fuel supply to meet the acute shortage of fuel there in wake of protests.

The Madhesi community in Nepal’s lowlands, many of whom trace their origins to India, have imposed an economic blockade to oppose the new constitution.

Nepal’s Deputy Prime Minister Thapa said nowhere in the world can there be any Constitution which is 100 per cent ideal.

Violence and instability in parts of Nepal has worsened in the run-up to and after the adoption of Nepal’s Constitution in September 2015.

There is no doubt that Indian diplomacy has failed to influence public opinion in Nepal to ensure fair treatment to the Madhesis, who, due to their proximity to India, look to New Delhi for political guidance. Firings, which had ceased just after the adoption of the Constitution, have reoccurred. India said it has deep rooted historic and cultural ties with Nepal and it will continue to extend all assistance to it for peace, stability and socio-economic development of the country.
