Coney Island beaches were closed today after sharks were spotted nearby
A Parks source said that there has not been a shark attack “in recent memory” in NY waters. Dohlin said he believes the sharks are coming close to shore for feeding. The Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the Coney Island Aquarium, issued the following statement: “Today’s reported shark sightings off Coney Island are a reminder that New York City and its waterways are home to fascinating marine wildlife”.

No word on whether the presence of dorsal fins off Coney Island might be a response to the shark fishing competition last month in Sheepshead Bay. They said the shark circled their boat for at least 10 minutes.
The Parks Dept.is asking people to stay out of the water, and to report unsafe conditions to beach personnel.
According to Crystal Howard, Parks Department spokesperson, “Out of an abundance of safety, Parks closes beaches to swimmers when sharks are in the immediate area”. The sightings took place on Tuesday morning and the beaches were immediately shutdown due to precautionary measures. The beach remained open.
