Confusion, corruption among Afghan forces hit Helmand defense

The presence of a small contingent of British troops, who arrived in the Shorab base – formerly Britain’s Camp Bastion during their Afghan combat mission – on Wednesday had helped boost morale of both civilians and security forces, officials said.
There have been widespread reports of desertion by Afghan troops after months of fighting, leadership confusion and a lack of coordination between army and police units.
Strategically located, and a centre for opium production, Sangin would be a significant gain for the Taliban. He said the entire province was in danger of falling to the Taliban.
The northern city of Kunduz briefly fell to the Taliban in late September – the biggest victory for the group in 14 years of war. It’s the fact that Rasulyar had to resort to posting his plea on Facebook to get the government’s attention.
The Taliban statement regarding the British troops deployment said that before entering Afghanistan “they should have studied the history of their ancestors and should have learned a lesson from the repeated defeat”. Key government posts, including the minister of defense, have not been permanently filled. The area is considered a Taliban stronghold, and it’s been one of the deadliest places for U.S. Marines.
“We call them up for reinforcement when there is an attack, but they won’t respond”. The Taliban this week pronounced they had seized control of the district, but the claim was widely refuted by Afghan officials. This is probably correct – but he is therefore committed to cultivating close ties with Pakistan in the hope that Inter-Services Intelligence, the Pakistani equivalent of the CIA, will deliver the Taliban to the table for peace talks. There were preliminary peace talks early this year, but there has been nothing since July. Fighting the Taliban is an afterthought.
Sangin is a prize for the Taliban as it sits on routes for drug, arms and other contraband that fund the insurgency.
This month marks a year since the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission in Afghanistan transitioned into an Afghan-led operation, with allied nations assisting in training local forces.

“Since the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation drawdown past year, the Taliban have gone from strength to strength. But it’s when they’re left to their own devices that they seem to struggle”.
