Confusion over cease-fire as United States walks back Kerry comments

Will this agreement be a pivotal moment in the Syrian civil war or simply another brief hiatus in the death and destruction?

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu fired back Monday, saying “that the global order mustn’t be mistaken with the American order” and that “maintaining the worldwide order is the prerogative of the entire global community, not only the Pentagon”.

So will this agreement be a pivotal moment in the Syrian civil war or simply another brief hiatus in the death and destruction?

Kerry made these remarks despite some continued violence in Aleppo and provocative comments made by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. But Kerry said he’s still cautiously optimistic about this new one. -Russian agreement is to allow the U.N.to establish aid corridors into Aleppo, the contested northern Syrian city.

Under the terms, if violence is significantly reduced for seven days, the United States and Russian Federation will collaborate on new airstrikes against jihadi militants in Syria, and the Syrian air force will be barred from flying over insurgent-held areas.

Who does it apply to?

As well as bringing a temporary end to the fighting, the deal aims to provide crucial aid to hundreds of thousands of desperate civilians. Now the group’s leader is Abu Yahyia Al-Hamawi.

“If we accept the assumption that the cease-fire will hold, more rebel fighters will be willing and available to fight IS in Aleppo province and perhaps Raqqa as well”, analyst Lund told VOA.

Syria’s army says it has begun implementing a U.S. “It’s about the regime or not”, said Lund.

Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni told reporters after talks with his Cypriot counterpart that a cessation of hostilities must happen before talks can begin.

Russian Federation has voiced concern that some Syrian rebel groups may not adhere to a cease-fire and is calling on Washington to ensure their compliance. The rebels, for their part, agree to basic principles such as the creation of humanitarian corridors. There are also concerns that the deal will actually strengthen the regime and create a much more chaotic scene on the ground.

US Secretary of State Kerry stressed in the ceasefire announcement on Friday that this latest set of accords relies on the goodwill and trust of those involved.

“The cease-fire does not include terrorist groups such as Daesh [Islamic State], Jabhat al-Nusra, or other newly formed splinter groups”, Ghassemi said, suggesting that Iran has rejected the rebranding effort by al-Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra, which now calls itself Jabhat Fatah al-Sham.

He also warned that the truce’s success depends on Russian Federation actually putting pressure on al-Assad.

“Remember, the opposition is essentially reliant on the United States and other western powers for support, supplies, weapons, etc., and if you read the letter that they received from the United States, it was very clear, and strongly worded, and it warned of dire consequences if they did not comply”.

BEIRUT – A cease-fire came into effect in Syria at sunset Monday in the latest attempt led by the United States and Russian Federation to bring some calm in the 5½-year civil war.

What are ramifications for disobeying ceasefire?

“We come today here to replace the fake freedom they tried to market at the beginning of the crisis. with real freedom”, he added. Yet why this should concern American policy makers is something of a puzzle: After all, Hezbollah poses no threat to US national security, and it is neither pro-Putin nor pro-Russian but simply sober realism to understand that US-Russian cooperation is crucial if there is to be an end to a civil war that has killed over 250,000 and has, according to United Nations estimates, displaced over 6.5 million people.
