“V.K. Singh will also hold meetings with African students in metro cities to assure them of their safety and security”, she added.

Mukesh was earlier arrested in a case of cheating and became friends with Saifi in Tihar prison previous year.

As one who was born and raised in Africa, I can understand the anguish of African diplomats in India in connection with the fatal attack on a Congolese student in New Delhi (“Envoy raises retaliatory attacks with Congo”, May 27). Mr. Sharma narrated how he had to cut down his morning and evening walks during a visit to South Africa because of safety concerns, and said that it is unfair to paint India as an unsafe country.

It requested all Indian nationals to “stay calm, avoid any confrontation or arguments and generally keep a low profile for the next couple of days”. “I would like to assure African students in India that this an unfortunate and painful incident involving local goons”, Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted.

While was returning from a friend’s house in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area on Friday night, he was allegedly beaten to death by three youths.

African heads of missions here had warned in a statement earlier this week that they had been left with “little choice” but to advise their governments to discourage students from travelling to India.

This was the latest in a series of assaults on students and professionals from African nations.

“Thousands of African students continue to pursue their education in India without any issues”, a foreign ministry spokesman said in a statement.

While Dubey acknowledges the rampant racism throughout his country, he sees it directed at dark-skinned people, as opposed to people specifically of African descent.

Two of the suspects have been detained, while a third remains on the run. In another incident, a Tanzanian woman was beaten and stripped naked by a mob in Bengaluru.
