There are speculations that Rahul Gandhi will take over as Congress president within this year. “I will be travelling to Europe for a few days”.

The Congress today celebrated its 131st foundation day with party president Sonia Gandhi unfurling the party flag at the AICC headquarters and inaugurating a series of events to mark the occasion. “On Congress party’s 131st anniversary, tribute to all those who’ve toiled selflessly to make it largest democratic party”, party’s official Twitter handle said. “Happy New Year to everyone”, Rahul tweeted. The Congress Lok Sabha MP from Amethi in Uttar Pradesh is travelling to Europe and has wished a Happy New Year to everyone. On the occasion, Ms Gandhi, Mr Gandhi and Dr Singh distributed candies to children at the AICC headquarters.
Gandhi had earlier this year taken “leave of absence” of about almost two months to reflect on the future course of the party. There was a political controversy even over his September visit to Aspen in the U.S. to attend a conference.

The party has not assigned any reason for his visit. This year’s foundation day comes at a time when the party’s top leadership, president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, came under the scanner in the National Herald case.
