While the saffron party, leading the alliance, won 60 seats, its allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodo Peoples’ Front (BPF) bagged 14 and 12 seats respectively.
Indian Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonwal, center, with Mahendra Singh, back, the BJP Assam official in-charge of elections, greets supporters after winning a majority in the Assam state assembly elections in Guwahati on Thursday.
Jaitley went on to say, “Post 2014 General Elections, the Congress has increasingly adopted fringe positions”.
“Now the issue is, can the BJP use the weakening of the Congress to reach out to non-Congress parties and get their support?” asked Joshi. Mamata Banerjee improved upon her performance despite reports by sections of the media in the state projecting a Left-Congress revival.
The editorial criticised the BJP top brass for attributing the results of the elections to the good work of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.
“Heartiest congratulations to Assam BJP Karyakartas & leaders for the exceptional win”. I take this opportunity to thank every Congress worker and leader and our allies for their effort during these elections.
In a congratulatory note to Sonowal, the Nagaland CM said it was a landmark victory for BJP as it is going to form government for the first time in Assam after dislodging Congress.
“Across India, people are placing their faith in BJP and see it as the party that can usher in all-round and inclusive development”, Modi tweeted.
Amid chants of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” by the party workers, he said, “BJP is rapidly receiving popular acceptance in all regions of India which augurs well for the democracy… this public support would give us more energy and encouragement”.
Analysing the results state-wise, Jaitley said, “It (Congress) lost both the states of Kerala and Assam”.
“We have been doing this since BJP formed its government at the centre. In Kerala and Tamil Nadu too our presence has increased”, Naidu said.

Sarma, a former student leader and Congress minister, had joined the BJP six months before the assembly. It has just about one seat in Kerala and can take satisfaction, at best, in opening its account, 7 in West Bengal which is a slight improvement, and none in Puducherry and Tamil Nadu that kept the state divided between the two regional Tamil parties.
