“When I was growing up in rural Alabama as a young child, we’d visit places like Troy or Montgomery and I’d see those signs that say, ‘white men, colored men, white women, colored women, white waiting, colored waiting, ‘” he said.
That’s a familiar refrain for viewers of “Mr. Robot”, not so much for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”, but that’s how Colbert kicked off last night’s show, wearing a hoodie and emulating Rami Malek’s mentally unstable computer hacker in a special opening spoofing the Showcase conspiracy thriller.
He was inspired to get in “good trouble” in the late 1950s after meeting Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. “And I’ve been getting in good trouble, necessary trouble, ever since”. “In 1958, I met Dr. King”, Lewis recalled.
This year, Lewis’ biggest fight was on the House floor where he led a rally in support of stricter gun legislation after the House GOP had blocked such measures. “They want us to do something”.
Afterward, Lewis jumped into the audience and rode the crowd. “We’ve got to stop the killing”.
