South Yorkshire Police said they were “increasingly concerned” as to the whereabouts of Conley after he failed to return to his home at Underwood Avenue in Worsbrough. When asked if he would miss Conley, Evan nodded.

Police decided the site was securely locked though, and it was only hours later that workers found his body.

Fears were growing for the safety of a seven-year-old schoolboy who has been missing since last night when he vanished from a park where he had been playing with friends.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Stopford said: “The results of the post mortem suggest that Conley had, by some means, entered a vertical pipe on a nearby construction site and was unable to get out”. He has been missing since 8pm last night.

Another said the “whole community is in shock”. “It would be heartbreaking if it were anybody but he had his life to come”.

After news of the tragedy broke, people started to lay flowers and teddies next to the construction site. “I cannot begin to picture through that family are getting what”, he said. He was a lovely lad just like any other his age.

One local mother, who did not want to be named, said: “It makes me really paranoid and nervous for my kids to play out”.

Formal identification is yet to take place, but the police said that they believe the body to be that of missing boy Conley Thompson.

Another woman said: “I can’t imagine what the family must be going through”.

“He was just a kid who liked playing out in the street”.

It has been reported by the BBC that the grandmother of Conley Thompson (aged 7) from Barnsley found dead on a construction site in South Yorkshire had “slipped into a vertical plastic pipe”. His death is believed to have been accidental.
