Conn. women, 1 pregnant, test positive for Zika
The Indiana Blood Center has been forced to defer up to 30 percent of donors at some post-spring break blood drives because they had traveled to areas where the Zika virus is being transmitted, according to a spokeswoman. “Whether it is more money for mosquito boards”.

“I knew it (Zika virus) was around and I was thinking it was Zika and of course I was thinking that”.
The Austin newspaper said that the first case of the Zika virus in Travis County (Austin) was reported in February.
Nelson, an Orlando Democrat, and Rubio, a Miami Republican, worked in concert to try to stop a compromise measure moving through the Senate that would authorize just $1.1 billion to treat the deadly virus, fund preventative vaccine research and pay for stepped-up mosquito control.
New York’s Department of Health is launching an all-out assault against mosquitoes amid growing concern about the Zika Virus. According to Public Health Agency Canada’s last update from last week, Canada has 67 cases identified from travel and one from sexual transmission. In one, the female mice were genetically wired to have a defective immune system, creating a model of severe disease when infected with Zika.
But researchers were particularly intrigued by the way Zika expanded inside the placenta, an organ that develops inside the uterus during pregnancy and nourishes the fetus.
Microcephaly is a medical condition in which abnormal brain development of a fetus or infant results in a head that is smaller than normal. They also show that infected brains are smaller with enlarged ventricles and a thinner cortex, consistent with a microcephalic phenotype. The virus zeroed in on the placenta, creating viral levels 1,000 times higher in the placenta than in the mother’s blood, the researchers said.
“However, the differences between mouse and human development mean that larger experimental animals that are more similar to humans – such as monkeys – must also be tested”.
Dr Derek Gatherer, from Lancaster University, said the findings “add to the weight of evidence that Zika virus is the cause of the apparent spike in microcephaly”.
The mice carried to term displayed the characteristic features of microcephaly and were found to have genetic abnormalities.
A 44-year-old man developed a painful rash when he became infected with Zika virus in Puerto Rico. After the virus is in circulation, it is able to infect the fetal brain, the investigators found. If given too early, the embryos didn’t survive, so the researchers began by looking at the equivalent of the second trimester in humans, when the fetus’s neural progenitor cells are intensively expanding and generating new neurons at the same time.

The disease is spread primarily via bites by infected Aedes mosquitoes, which so far have not been detected in Marin.
