“We are getting a lot of these calls throughout the county”, he said. “Residents are reminded that the IRS will always send taxpayers a written notification of any tax due via the USA mail”.

“This type of call is a scam”, Wilson said in a media release. “So these people (scammers) have a knack for picking out the information and then posing as a family member to extort money”. “A lot of people just don’t understand they’re being scammed”.

A caller, pretending to work for the Internal Revenue Service, will harass the person and threaten them with arrest or another punishment if he or she does not pay a certain sum immediately with a debit card or a pre-paid money order. “Don’t give out sensitive information like credit or debit card numbers over the phone”. “Anyone receiving such calls should never make payment or provide the caller with any personal or banking information”, police said. If you know you owe or think you may owe tax, call the IRS at 800-829-1040.

Attorney General Rutledge released the following list of actions the IRS will not take, in hopes that Arkansans can spot this scam ahead of time.

“No one will overpay you, this is done on goal”, said Aloy.
