Contending Dodgers get Rich Hill, Josh Reddick from A’s

The Los Angeles Dodgers made their big trade-deadline splash by acquiring outfielder Josh Reddick and left-hander Rich Hill from the Oakland A’s.

Reddick is hitting.296 with eight home runs and 28 RBI in 68 games this season.

Beltran signed a $45 million, three-year contract before the 2014 season but played with an elbow bone spur during much of his first season in NY and got off to a slow start in 2015 following surgery. If at the end of the day, Puig stays in LA, it’s still possible the Dodgers could move him after the deadline through waivers.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports was the first to report the trade. This season, Hill has a 9-3 record and 2.25 ERA over 76 innings of work.

A 39-year-old switch-hitter, Beltran has been the Yankees’ top offensive player, leading NY with a.304 batting average, 22 homers and 64 RBIs. Both Reddick and Hill were mentioned as potential Ranger targets, with Hill, in particular, seen as being someone Texas might target. Along with Chapman and Rondon, Chicago is enjoying Kris Bryant’s and Anthony Rizzo’s contributions, while both players compete for the National League’s MVP award. Given the 25-year-old’s disappointing results so far this year (.706 OPS), Reddick should represent a sizable upgrade over him in right field. Cotton does have decent upside, but his real value might be out of the bullpen.

There have been more then a few teams in interested in Hill. It needed another starter with Clayton Kershaw shelved to a back injury and the bottom of the rotation struggling to do anything of substance from the bump.

The A’s placed Hill on the DL on Saturday due to a blister, although that move is retroactive to July 20, so he could be able to return shortly.

Frankie Montas (5), Grant Holmes (4), and Jharel Cotton (10) were all ranked as Top-10 prospects in the Dodgers’ system heading in to 2016 by Baseball Prospectus.

Overton last started for the A’s on July 19, tossing a quality start of 6 1/3 innings and three runs allowed with six strikeouts and no walks. Los Angeles’ pitching staff has been riddled with injuries this year, as Clayton Kershaw, Brett Anderson, Hyun-jin Ryu, and Alex Wood are now on the disabled list.
