Contested convention looms for US Republican Party
Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were the winners in a big presidential primary day Tuesday, but both showed just enough vulnerability to keep the races intensely contested for at least another month.

Hillyer said the focus of the D.C. meeting remained beating Trump within the Republican Party apparatus, not mounting an independent bid.
Kasich was pressed by host Alisyn Camerota to explain his path to the Republican nomination, since it is mathematically impossible for him to reach the 1,237 delegates needed to win the nomination outright – a fact that supporters of GOP opponent Ted Cruz eagerly point out. Now, he’s the GOP frontrunner for the presidential nomination. “But he has time to fix it”. “John Kasich is best positioned to stop Donald Trump in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Pacific coast states”, Kasich chief strategist John Weaver said Friday in a statement. On Tuesday, for example, she won all five states but lost among white men in all of them, including by double digits in North Carolina, Missouri, and OH, according to exit polls.
Yet another scenario is a “brokered” convention, which means backroom deals made by the insider Republicans that Trump and Cruz say they oppose.
The front-runner needs 1,237 delegates to clinch the party’s nomination, and if that does not happen, the party could decide to hold a contested convention to determine who the nominee would become. Mormons are a majority of the state’s population. (Trump) will not have enough delegates. If no candidate cracks 50 percent, the delegates are allocated proportionally, with a 15-percent minimum threshold for winning any delegates. Marco Rubio was still in the race.
And so I think that if we get into a situation where we are moving towards an open convention in Cleveland, there will be a lot of cutting of deals, some of them as unsavory as anything you’ve seen on “House Of Card”, if not more so. Trump gets 21% and Kasich gets 13%.
“I could end up having the most amount of delegates going into the convention – who knows?”
Sean Spicer, the RNC’s communications director and chief strategist, said in an interview with CNN on Wednesday that he assumed Trump was “speaking figuratively”.
“To imply that if I don’t win that there’s a potential for violence only moves us in the direction of getting people to think that way”, Kasich said.

While many delegates have openly stated that they would not switch candidates through the convention process, it is possible that an internal shift in the GOP could open the door for Cruz and Mr. Kasich to make a run at stopping Trump’s surprising ascent despite their delegate counts heading into July.
