Memon was convicted of providing technical and logistical support to the bombings which killed 257 people and were allegedly carried out by his brother. In an appeal to maintain peace and harmony to ensure law and order in Maharashtra, Fadnavis exercised caution as he made the statement on Memon’s death sentence after the funeral was over.

Prominent citizens, including retired Supreme Court judges, had urged Indian President Mukerjee to commute Memon’s sentence to life in prison. However, the Indian Central Bureau of Investigation said that he was arrested in New Delhi on August. 5, 1994.

In an interview to a television channel, Rohatgi, who contested Memon’s plea, said that submitting a mercy petition on the eve of the execution was wrong and Memon should have done it in April 2014 when his mercy petition was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee.

The Congress on Thursday said that the victims of 1993 Mumbai terror attacks will get complete justice only once the primary accused in the case Tiger Memon and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim are punished. A total of 100 people have been convicted.

The 1993 attacks were followed by the lengthiest trials in India’s history, with 686 witnesses giving testimonies, which filled 13,000 pages.

“You must understand that at some point of time, some finality has to come”. Police were also stationed at the various places in the city where the bombs had exploded.

For the protection of human rights, United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution and endorsed it towards the abolition of the death penalty worldwide.

During the execution, no family member of the terrorist was present at the jail.

The Press Trust of India news agency also reported the execution, citing officials.

Memon and two other brothers were convicted in 2006 by a specially designated court, using controversial anti-terror legislation that was introduced after the attacks that is no longer on the statute books.
