Convicted prosecutor says last day bittersweet

The Scranton native’s immediate focus includes what to do about her felony conviction Monday night. Kane, a Democrat, announced she would resign Wednesday, two days after a jury convicted her of abusing the powers of the state’s top law enforcement office by leaking secret grand jury information to smear a rival and lying under oath to cover it up.

“I have been honored to serve the people of Pennsylvania and I wish them health and safety in all their days”, Kane said in a statement.

Kane’s conviction and subsequent resignation represents a dramatic turn of fortune for the 50-year-old former county prosecutor who was the first woman and first Democrat elected as attorney general in Pennsylvania. He later added: “We believe our defense was compromised, and we will fight that to the end”.

Castor is Kane’s top deputy and the next in line to succeed the embattled official. I will concentrate my full attention on ensuring Pennsylvania is a safer place for all of us by restoring integrity to the Office of Attorney General.

Democrat Kathleen Kane’s exit completes a spectacular fall for the former county prosecutor who soared to victory four years ago as an outsider promising to break up an “old-boys’ network” in state government. Voters will select a new attorney general in the November election.

He called himself someone who speaks candidly, tries to do what’s right and has made decisions independent of his boss, Kane. Immediately afterward, the lawyers went into a private conference with the judge, leaving Kathleen – who campaigned on a promise to uncover political intrusion in Pennsylvania – left alone at the conference table.

But the trial judge would not allow Kane’s lawyers to raise the email scandal in court as the motive to prosecute her.

“There is to be absolutely no retaliation of any kind against any witness in this case, either by your own devices, from your own mouth or your hand, or directing anybody to do anything”, she said.

Barley said those attempts to portray Shapiro as a Kane redux may be Rafferty’s best chance to separate the AG’s race from the top of the ticket – especially if Trump continues to lag here.

He admitted in court that he previously lied during several grand jury hearings at which he testified Kane never saw the documents that she is now convicted of leaking to reporters.

Kane, Pennsylvania’s former attorney-general, has gone from the USA state’s top prosecutor to a convicted felon. He ran for Attorney General in 2004 but lost to Tim Corbett. She believed he was the source for a March 2014 Philadelphia Inquirer story reporting that she had secretly shut down a sting operation targeting Philadelphia officials who were caught on tape accepting cash.

The matter was under discussion with senators, although Wolf’s office said no decision had been made about whether to nominate a placeholder. We are a very honorable profession here.

Now, Kane is facing jail time and can not even practice private law after losing her license. That makes them politicians as well as officers of the court. We intend to pursue all arguments that are available to us.

“We’re certainly going to point out that the last time we elected the less experienced candidate we had some issues”. While the law permits a maximum sentence of up to 28 years, sentencing guidelines recommend that a judge stay within a range of punishment from probation to one year for a perjury conviction.
