Cook departs early on rain-hit first morning in Durban
Both Taylor, playing his second Test match after three years out of the side, and Compton, returning this match following a similar hiatus for his 10th Test appearance, stood strong for 45.2 overs of watchful batting under heavy skies that belied any personal nerves about their respective places. “It was a shame about James Taylor’s dismissal at the end given how well he’d played”.

A slight drizzle in Durban delayed the toss by 30 minutes.

Leaving his first 10 balls to fly behind his wicket, Cook finally looked to play one, but edged to second slip, out for a duck.
Taylor, though, was unable to survive the day and give himself a chance of a maiden Test century as Steyn struck shortly before the close.
That feeling changed in the second half of the session as Compton continued to counter South Africa’s aggression with a pacifism that would impress any Buddhist, and Taylor played a feisty innings that the optimistic among England’s fans might see as the embodiment of their fearless new era.
But the pressure was still palpable, not least when Compton called for a risky single to get off nought.
Taylor had endured a similarly lengthy exile from the Test side from August 2012 before a combination of domestic form and impressive displays in the England one-day side prompted a Test recall against Pakistan in November.
An early lunch was taken but Steyn’s rhythm was not hindered by the break.
Steven Finn might have added the scalp of De Villiers for 11 but the on-field umpires could not be certain Ben Stokes had taken a clean catch at gully and, as so often, slow-motion replays merely clouded the issue.
Root cracked two fours and sent a pull for six off seamer Kyle Abott in an attempted counterattack.
“I tried my hardest to immerse myself in the situation rather than thinking about too many personal things”. But he went back on his stumps when Piedt came into the attack and was trapped leg before wicket by a ball which spun back at him.
He is the eighth batsman to partner Cook at opener since Andrew Strauss’ retirement, and England dearly hope the Nottinghamshire man is ready to put an end to that merry-go-round.
Another rain delay allowed Compton and Taylor to take stock and when they re-emerged the pair started to drag their side back into the game.
Compton happily soaked up overs with his well-drilled defence, only emerging from his shell when Abbott or Steyn offered extra width.

On Compton’s unbeaten 63 from 179 balls, Taylor added: “It’s been a few years out for both of us and laying down a marker is important for the team”.
