Corbyn has never had the support of the majority of Labour parliamentarians, Chilton explained.
But, in what could be viewed as a threat to Labour MPs opposed to his leadership, Mr Corbyn suggested they would all face having to be re-selected as candidates before 2020.
By Tuesday, more than 55,000 people had paid £25 to vote in the race and the number was expected to rise before the Wednesday deadline.
Jeremy Corbyn will be a defendant in the legal challenge to his automatic inclusion on the Labour leadership ballot, the high court has decided.
Launching his leadership fightback, the Labour leader said it was the “responsibility of every Labour MP to get behind the party”.
Corbyn vowed to tackle the “five ills of 21st century Britain”, which he listed as inequality, neglect, prejudice, insecurity and discrimination.
Smith is barely known outside of Westminster and Wales but moderates in the Labour party are hoping he will dethrone the current Labour leader, who has been heavily criticised for lukewarm campaigning in favour of Britain staying in the European Union.
Speaking at the launch of his campaign to hold onto the leadership, Mr Corbyn had a laugh at Pontypridd MP Mr Smith’s expense.
However, she sidestepped a question from the Labour leader when he sought to challenge her about comments by new Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson calling black people “piccaninnies” and questioning the motives of President Barack Obama because of his “part-Kenyan” heritage.
He said: “I just hope that – and I’m sure he will – that Owen will come fully on board on the idea of the NHS being totally public, and publicly employed people running it”.
In a poll carried out over the first full weekend since May announced her cabinet – as well as the ongoing Labour leadership contest – 40% of those asked said they would vote for the Tories if there was an election tomorrow compared to 29% for Labour.
Corbyn critics – many of them supporters of the more centrist policies of former leader Tony Blair – accuse Corbyn of pursuing a leftist agenda that could keep the party out of power for years.
Now one Merseyside politician has perfectly captured the mood among many Labour supporters with a photo he tweeted of the Conservative benches in Parliament.

A fund that had raised more than £14,000 in three days to help those voters was shut down after the party’s National Executive Committe said it was in violation of its rules.
