Labour will oppose any attempt by the Conservative government to undermine rights at work – whether in domestic or European legislation”.

Now Corbyn is the leader of the Labour Party, we all fear that his beliefs, which were confined to the fringes of politics, could become a legitimate part of the mainstream.

Writing in the Financial Times (FT), the new Labour leader – who had been criticised for appearing to leave the door open for backing withdrawal – said: “Labour is clear that we should remain in the EU”.

But showbusiness agent Michael Foster, who has given Labour £420,000 since 2013, told the newspaper he had backed the leader and would continue “to give as much under Jeremy Corbyn as I did under any other leaders”.

Corbyn debuted a new form of Prime Ministers’ Questions in parliament, reading out questions from members of the public, and left voters wondering whether he would vote to stay in the European Union. For sure we’ll make mistakes, every Government does.

“If Mr Cameron fails to deliver a good package or one that reduces the social gains we have previously won in Europe, he needs to understand that Labour will renegotiate to restore our rights and promote a socially progressive Europe”.

MPs like Kate Hoey and Mr Corbyn’s Socialist Campaign Group ally Kelvin Hopkins are already on the steering group of an embryonic “Out” campaign.

Jon Cruddas told the BBC prior to the results on Saturday that victory for Mr Corbyn did risk the collapse of the party, but added that there was no safe ground for Labour and that his victory would not be cause for crisis.

That will make it harder for David Cameron, the prime minister, to secure parliamentary approval to extend Britain’s bombing campaign against Islamic State from Iraq to Syria.

Asked about potential disagreements with shadow cabinet members, many of whom did not back his leadership bid, he said there would be discussions ahead.

“Just imagine United Kingdom media headlines if the Russian President called a leading opposition party a threat to national security?” the embassy responded on its Twitter account, launching a fierce debate and endless stream of re-tweets.

On the future of the nuclear deterrent, Mr Corbyn insisted he would not let the policy differences tear Labour apart. “We need a new economic settlement,” Corbyn urged.

Ms Sturgeon interjected: “I said once!”

MP Charlotte Leslie said “It’s a very odd feeling, as someone who has never sold any piece of art or craft in their life, to think that anyone might want to buy something that you yourself have done. I have been elected on a mandate from more than a quarter of a million people“.
