Cornerback Josh Norman bypasses 49ers, strikes it rich in Washington
They both spoke about the team’s situation at cornerback one day after the team announced they rescinded the franchise tag on Josh Norman making him a free agent.

“After a number of conversations with Josh’s agent, we realized that a long-term deal was not attainable”, said Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman, per the organization’s official Twitter account. Garafolo tweeted that Norman gets $51 million over the first three years, and is now the highest paid cornerback in the NFL. He’s reportedly signing a five-year deal worth $75 million.
The 28-year-old Norman was flown by private jet to Washington by the Redskins on Friday and, according to ESPN, he was accompanied by his mother and several family members.
Norman played his best season previous year during the Panthers’ run to the Super Bowl where they fell short against the Denver Broncos.
Last season Norman made 58 combined tackles, defended 19 passes, caught four interceptions and returned two for touchdowns. And with more than $50 million in cap space, Chip Kelly and company have plenty of money to meet Norman’s demands and make this happen.
“GM Jon Robinson only has about half the cap space of the Jaguars, a bit less than $30 million, but has already shown a willingness to make bold moves in his bid to rebuild the franchise”. Norman?s agent says the cornerback has agreed to terms on a contract with the Washington Redskins.
Although the Panthers clearly didn’t want Norman, the opposite was true in Washington. He named the 49ers, Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Pittsburgh Steelers as some of the teams that are interested.
In a series of emojis, Norman has confirmed his newfound allegiance with the defending NFC East champions. It’ll also certainly be interesting to watch Norman go up against Odell Beckham Jr. twice a year.
