The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were investigating, The Associated Press reported.

The CBC says the avalanche took place on Friday, Jan. 29, at around 1:30 p.m. near Mount Renshaw, in the Rocky Mountains.

Rescue crews and paramedics worked through the afternoon and evening to remove people from the area and to tend to the injured.

Two groups of snowmobilers were involved, according to Cuzma.

“It’s definitely a time to be cautious and until we get more details, people should be very, very cautious”, says Karl Klassen, Warning Service Manager for Avalanche Canada.

Above-normal temperatures covered the region ahead of Friday’s avalanche, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Matt Rinde said.

McBride is about 210 kilometres southeast of Prince George.

“A fairly significant weather event added rain and snow to the snowpack over the last few days followed by clearing and cooling today”, Mr Klassen said in a statement.
