“We are heartbroken about this senseless act of violence”, said school superintendent Joanne Avery. Although they appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers, they ask for privacy.

The second student and the teacher were taken to AnMed Health System. The other student, along with one female teacher who was also injured-though whether she was shot is unclear-were taken to AnMed Medical Center.

Authorities said the dead male victim is believed to be 47 years old. The sheriff said the teen had been homeschooled.

The two students wounded in the attack are both six years old. The firefighter, who hasn’t been named publicly, is said to have 33 years of service, according to KWCH.

The incident was the latest in a series of shootings at United States schools that have fuelled the debate about access to guns in America. Pictures from the scene showed a pickup truck that had crashed into a fence at the school.

“We have offered the assistance of members of our emergency response team and other personnel, who are now providing needed support to this community”.

Smith said Brock was either not armed or did not use a weapon and it was not clear whether the shooter’s gun had a malfunction that allowed Brock to apprehend the teenager.

Deputies in Anderson County said that a suspect was taken into custody after a shooting at Townville Elementary. The suspect never entered the building.

The Oconee County school district requested law enforcement presence Thursday at every elementary school in the county to reassure parents and students that the schools are safe, Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said. One student was shot in the leg and the other in the foot, Capt. Garland Major with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said.

About 300 students attend the school, Townville elementary, roughly four hours’ drive west of Charleston on the Georgia-South Carolina state line.
