The inmate accused of stabbing a correctional officer at William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore on Thursday is charged with attempted murder, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Corrections spokesman Bob Horton says the officer was listed in serious condition Friday.

News 5 first broke this story when sources came forward with details on Thursday afternoon.

Cunningham assaulted and stabbed the officer in retaliation for being denied an extra tray of food, authorities said. Correctional officers responded to the incident and were able to constrain the inmate and give aid to the injured officer. Cunningham is serving a 20-year sentence on a first-degree conviction in 2013 in Baldwin County.

The facility has been placed on lockdown and Cunningham has been segregated from the general population.

The agency has reported several incidents at the prison in Atmore this year. Inmates tried to take control of a dormitory in March, resulting in the stabbing of the warden and a Corrections officer.

Inmates said the reason for the riots were overcrowding and inhuman conditions. Three inmates were stabbed during that disturbance.
