Cortland Finnegan: Saints expected to sign CB Finnegan

The team signed veteran cornerback Cortland Finnegan following a visit on Friday, according to a source. Shortly after his release, he announced his retirement from the NFL.

Finnegan appeared in 213 snaps for the Carolina Panthers defense in 5 games played during the regular season.

Ultimately Finnegan’s addition to the Saints is nothing more than a depth addition. He had 33 tackles and eight passes defensed over 12 games for the Miami Dolphins in 2014. He caught an interception in the Panthers’ divisional round win over the Seattle Seahawks. It was Finnegan’s first Super Bowl appearance. “It took me 10 years just to get to the playoffs again, let alone the Super Bowl”. Those two injuries led to undrafted rookie Ken Crawley starting opposite P.J. Williams against the Patriots in Thursday’s preseason opener and fellow undrafted rookie De’Vante Harris being the first cornerback off the bench. “Why kill yourself again in another training camp to maybe have a knee replacement five, 10 years earlier than you’re supposed to, because [former head coach Joe Philbin’s] not giving you a break?” Perhaps this will mark the appropriate final chapter in this National Football League career.
