Ramirez widened the Red Sox lead to 6-2 when he opened the eighth inning by hitting his 21st homer on the first major league pitch thrown by Padres’ right-hander Jake Smith.

“I felt it grab when I took off”, Cosart said. Cosart faced Boston in his rookie season with Houston and yielded two runs with five walks over five innings in a no-decision August 7, 2013.WALK-OFFS1.

Carlos Villanueva immediately gave up back-to-back singles to score Bradley, and then gave up two more runs on a double from Dustin Pedroia. Price is 5-0 with a 2.06 ERA in his last five starts for the Red Sox, who pulled into a first-place tie with Toronto atop the American League East with Tuesday’s 5-1 victory.Boston’s starting pitchers improved to 15-8 with a 3.06 ERA since August 1 after Clay Buchholz allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings in Tuesday’s win, but rookie third baseman Yoan Moncada is having a series to forget.

“He missed one spot to Travis Shaw and he made him pay”, Padres manager Andy Green said.

Paul Clemens (2-5) took the loss as he failed to complete five innings for the fourth time in eight starts as a Padre.

Price surrendered an RBI double in the first and a sacrifice fly in the third, but held the Padres bats dormant the rest of the game.

With one out in the fourth, Myers botched a throw to first, pulling Cosart off the bag and allowing Jackie Bradley, Jr.to reach safely.

Three relievers finished off the Padres, with Craig Kimbrel getting the final out. The Red Sox designated hitter was limited to pinch-hitting duties during the three games at Petco Park. Cosart opened the inning with a single and advanced to second on a single by Jon Jay, who was starting his first game since suffered a right forearm fracture when hit by a pitch back June 19.

The Red Sox went ahead 2-1 when Shaw crushed Cosart’s 93 miles per hour fastball 425 feet for a two-run homer.

Yangervis Solarte’s RBI double in the first scored Myers for a 1-0 lead.

NOTES: Boston 3B Yoan Moncada, ranked the top prospect in the minor leagues this season, struck out in each of his first seven at-bats against the Padres.

Red Sox: LHP David Price (14-8, 3.92) caps the three-game series in San Diego. “Whenever my name is called I try to go out and give our team the best chance that I can to win, and I’m feeling good right now”.

“You have to give Clay a tremendous amount of credit for the mental preparation and being ready to go”, said Boston manager John Farrell of Buchholz, who has gone to a no-windup delivery and changed his arm angle in recent weeks. Out there it was really grabbing pretty good. Travis Shaw went deep to right field on the first pitch he saw for two runs.

Red Sox: RHP Steve Wright (bursitis right shoulder) remains out and Farrell said he doesn’t know an end date to the injury. Porcello has thrown eight straight quality road starts. Richard threw five innings of one-run ball on September 1 against the Dodgers but didn’t factor into the win.
