Cosby claim: Charge politically motivated

Lawyer Monique Pressley, speaking on NBC’s Today Show on Thursday, also accused the district attorney’s office in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, of playing “political football” with Cosby by making the case a focal point in a recent election.

“For many of my 29 clients who allege that they are victims of Bill Cosby, seeing him criminally charged and having to face a trial is the best Christmas present they have ever received”, high-profile attorney Gloria Allred told reporters in Los Angeles. The 78-year-old comedian previously said under oath that he had consensual sexual contact with the woman.

It’s the first criminal case against Cosby over his conduct with women, which has received new scrutiny in the past year.

Cosby was released Wednesday on $1 million bail. But he and his lawyers, while acknowledging marital infidelity on his part, have consistently denied any allegations of sexual misconduct. He campaigned against former prosecutor Bruce Castor who had declined to bring charges against Mr Cosby when Ms Constand first reported the assault in 2005.

Hours later, Cosby arrived at a small courthouse to be arraigned. Constand’s lawyer, Dolores Troiani, confirmed to CNN that the charge was connected to her.

Cosby’s next preliminary hearing is set for January 14.

“He’s really not a politician”, she said.

He said that the charges in Pennsylvania serve to provide evidence to support their civil case.

Attorney Joe Cammarata, who represents seven accusers who are suing Cosby in civil court, also issued a statement, saying the case rests on Cosby’s “own words” in his Constand deposition. The records say Cosby drugged and assaulted a Temple University employee in his Montgomery County home.

Constand told police in 2005 that Cosby had drugged and assaulted her in his Cheltenham mansion.

“We expect the DA, who is is highly motivated, who is fulfilling a campaign promise, …is going to do whatever he can to convince a judge to consider all types of evidence that do not belong in a court”, Pressley said, in answer to a question about whether other accusers of Cosby (who now number almost 60) will be allowed to testify at a trial.

The decision to prosecute came just days before Pennsylvania’s 12-year statute of limitations for bringing charges was set to run out.

In the deposition, Cosby admitted under questioning that he obtained drugs, including Quaaludes, to give to women he sought for sex. On the Today show, his attorney said they are not interested in a plea deal.
