Cosby, 78, did not enter a plea in the courtroom in Elkins Park, in the Philadelphia area, a court clerk told Agence France-Presse.
“Friends and fans, Thank you”, the message read.
On Thursday, Cosby’s lawyer, Monique Pressley, told Today that she was aiming for full exoneration for Cosby, and that she would accept nothing less.
Constand claims she was drugged by Cosby at his Pennsylvania home in January 2004 when he gave her three blue pills and a glass of wine to wash them down with, according to a criminal complaint.
“We expect the DA, who is is highly motivated, who is fulfilling a campaign promise, …is going to do whatever he can to convince a judge to consider all types of evidence that do not belong in a court”, Pressley said, in answer to a question about whether other accusers of Cosby (who now number almost 60) will be allowed to testify at a trial.
The women who have claimed to be victim’s of Cosby’s actions are from a wide spectrum of professions and varying levels of fame.
She told police that Cosby drugged her and violated her by putting his hands down her trousers at his mansion in suburban Philadelphia in 2004, but no charges were initially laid.
She says Cosby “fondled her breasts” and then sexually assault on her. She says she woke up at 4 a.m. with her “sweater bunched up” and her “bra undone”. Cosby, through his representatives, accused some of the women of trying to extract money from him or get ahead in show business. One segment of the ad quotes Castor’s 2005 remark that “in Pennsylvania, we charge people for criminal conduct”. Cosby says he would let her relax.
After the criminal case went nowhere, Constand settled her lawsuit against Cosby in 2006 on confidential terms. “He wants you to go up to his room.’ I said to them, ‘Come with me, I don’t want to go up there alone” and when we went up there he was so pissed that I brought these guys with me.
To date, more than 55 women have accused the comedian of sexual assault or rape beginning as early as the 1960s.
On Wednesday, he was charged criminally for the first time in Pennsylvania. If he’s found guilty, he’ll face up to 10 years in jail.
Constand met Cosby through his alma mater Temple University, where she was working at the time.
Cosby says he didn’t intend for Constand to stay the night.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for January 14. She said her clients are willing to testify if called.
Cosby’s lawyer declined to comment on the charge before the announcement. “It just hit me so hard and I didn’t anticipate I was going to react that way”.

Steele – who is the top deputy in the DA’s office and takes over next week – attacked Castor during the campaign for not prosecuting Cosby, running an ad that said: “Bruce Castor was not looking out for the victims”.
