Cotton Bowl: Gamers to observe
Clemson will take on Alabama in that game and the storylines will abound – Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is an Alabama grad and coaches on both teams have worked at both programs. Swinney has been playing the “disrespect” card all season in order to motivate his team, and since Alabama is already a favorite in Las Vegas, he’ll be able to do the same in the lead-up to the title game.

Clemson advanced with a 37-17 rout of Oklahoma yesterday in the Orange Bowl, while Alabama beat Michigan State 38-0 in the Cotton Bowl. Freshman wide receiver Calvin Ridley had 138 receiving yards on 8 catches for 2 touchdowns, setting a new Alabama freshman record for single-season receiving yards in the process (1,031 yards).
There was a point in Alabama’s dismembering of Michigan State on Thursday night when Spartans quarterback Connor Cook – reduced to a dinged, dazed and daffy mess by the Crimson Tide’s defense – looked up after another incomplete pass and mouthed the words, “They’re (expletive) everywhere”. Conventional wisdom on beating Alabama was to take away the run and make Coker, the promising Florida State transfer who sat the bench most of last season, win the game.
The Crimson Tide traditionally do not have problems with teams like Michigan State. “Props to him, he’s a really good player”.
Defensive coordinator Brent Venables thought the key to his group’s success was shutting down Oklahoma’s running attack, something that could be key against an Alabama team that features the nation’s best running back in Derrick Henry.
The Crimson Tide benefitted from the threat of their star running back more than his actual skills against Michigan State.
“Maybe we were a little bit too complacent, and I take responsibility for all that”, Saban said about last year’s game.
Michael Rector caught two touchdown passes for Stanford, which reigned atop the Pac-12 and conquered the Rose Bowl again with coach David Shaw’s brand of simple, powerful football.
“They know the offense just as good as me”, Cook said. “He had to make the plays because they were there, and he certainly made them”. He finished with 75 yards but did score two touchdowns. “He was not a spring midyear (enrollee), so we didn’t get him until the summer”. Alabama received the kick-off and marched right down the field and into the end zone when Coker found Ridley-who fought a Spartans defender-for a six-yard touchdown to help give Alabama a 17-0 lead.
The true freshman was a starter by the fourth game of the season and has become the top target for quarterback Jake Coker.
“I’m focused and I’m humble and I want my team to be the same way”, Clemson linebacker B.J. Goodson said. Ohio State tailback Ezekiel Elliott rushed for 230 yards against the Tide last January.
Lawson, who intends to turn pro after this season, said he’ll be ready to go in his final college game. The defense has two shutouts in that span, allowed offenses only seven points in the past two games and totaled 43 sacks with 21 forced turnovers.
“It’s like we can’t even enjoy this one”, Venables said after Clemson’s College Football Playoff semifinal victory over Oklahoma. “We worked our butts off and this is what you get when you work hard”.
Watson had 145 yards on 24 carries and the Tigers’ first touchdown on a 5-yard run.

Then there’s Clemson pilot Deshaun Watson, the only quarterback invited to NY for a Heisman Trophy show so interminable that it might not have ended just yet, and the third-place finisher in that balloting. “I sure will be rooting for them though”.
