Coughlin says put the blame on me, leave the players alone
“Going forward from that game on, we’ve played with the mentality that I like to play with”. They got some pressure early, had turnovers, they made plays, I made bad throws, made bad decisions, and I wasn’t on my game.

“Jerick is a good football player, and you see the explosiveness that he has”, coach Mike Zimmer said. The Vikings could have clinched a playoff berth before kickoff on Sunday, but the Atlanta Falcons beat the previously undefeated Carolina Panthers and the Seattle Seahawks lost to the already-eliminated St. Louis Rams, keeping alive the possibility of a three-way tie with those two teams that would keep the Vikings out. That’s the only factor that regards whatever all the discussion comes.
“You’ve got to break it down again”, Coughlin said.
Even Coughlin acknowledged it the day after the game, saying that while he defended Beckham, “I will not defend his actions yesterday because they were wrong and this particular franchise and organization does not tolerate that”. We’re going to work as hard as we possibly can. General manager Jerry Reese is in charge of keeping the roster stocked with talented players, but it wouldn’t be an unreasonable argument to suggest he has failed just as badly as Coughlin.
If Coughlin goes, McAdoo, the team’s first-year offensive coordinator, probably does too, and that would be to the detriment of Manning, who just signed a four-year, $84 million contract extension and is playing some of the best football of his career. The Giants’ putrid performance on a national stage made it clear it is time for the Coughlin era to end. Will he retire on his own? This may be found in what Bridgewater said following the Giants game, as well as the overall on-field unity and resiliency that the Vikings have shown this season through thick and thin.
The speculation about job security is something to which Coughlin and the Giants have gotten accustomed, although the circumstances would appear to make the current situation more tenuous than any of the other times he has been on the perceived hot seat. In New York, the Giants are expected to play better especially with how good Eli Manning has been. Robert Ayers meanwhile played lights out, recording 1.5 of the Giants’ three sacks on the evening. “I didn’t do a good job getting them the ball”.
The 69-year-old coach on Thursday sidestepped a direct question whether he wanted to come back for a 13th season. “I think Teddy believes in him, that’s part of it”. Put it that way, leave it that way. “We’ve put ourselves in position to take the title next week”, said Peterson.
The Manning-Coughlin partnership has been mutually beneficial and it has borne fruit right from the moment Eli won his first game as a starter, against the Cowboys and Bill Parcells on the last night of the 2004 season.
Whatever happens, Coughlin finds himself in the one place he hates to be – with the focus nearly entirely on him. When the time comes for the Giants to move on from Coughlin, whether it’s next week, next year or a few years down the road, they’ll do it with the care and respect a coach with two Super Bowl wins on his resume deserves.

Coughlin deserves that much. He doesn’t deserve to have ownership let him twist in the wind – if they think it’s time to try something else they should just tell him, and allow his tenure to end with some dignity. So are the Eagles, who visit MetLife Stadium for the season finale on Sunday.
