Could holograms power next gen Google Glass?

Google has filed for a patent on a “head wearable display” that would show holograms. The newly approved patent, in contrast, would instead be superimposing computer-generated images on top of the current real-world view seen by the user.

In January, Google had announced about shutting down its Glass Explorer programme, but had been working on an upgraded Google Glass 2.

The next generation Google Glass will come with a range of new features including being foldable, waterproof and more durable, according to leaks.

The Google Glass may still sound like a thing from the future.

The new patent describes how Google could potentially do this with augmented reality via holograms. According to reports, the company is now pursuing the project under a new name.

The patent adds more context to why Google was the leader of the funding round for Magic Leap, an augmented reality startup company, which raised $542 million. This application, not a granted patent, information could be for using holograms with a device like Google Glass.

The patent shows Google ‘s research into how it could merge its head mounted display technology with augmented reality. “Magic Leap wants to turn the world into a movie theater and Google wants it to be through Glass”.

The experience would drive Google Glass deeper into augmented reality, as the company looks to reverse the misfortune that beset the wearable device. According to Mashable Asia, “Google Glass” is Google’s effort to develop glasses that amplify or compliment reality.
