Council “committed” to supporting people with mental illnesses

Even today, with more knowledge on mental illness and how people are affected by it, there is still a stigma attached to having a mental health condition. In Putnam County the numbers are similar, and may be rising.

She shared a positive message for mental health patients as the month is celebrated.

A presidential proclamation recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month said, “Although we have made progress expanding mental health coverage and elevating the conversation about mental health, too many people still do not get the help they need”.

Revealed on Monday, a latest research by NHS Providers and the Healthcare Financial Management Association discovered that just 50% of the 32 mental health trusts they contacted to, 55% of the total, got a real-terms rise in their budgets in 2015-16. “It’s also why the Suicide Prevention Task Force was established in the County”.

As for mental-health issues across the community, resources deserve support. The data comes from the national premier telephone survey, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), and Putnam residents have reported 3.1 poor mental health days in the previous month-up from 2.2 days in previous surveys.

Talking about mental health is meant to help remove the shame and stigma of speaking out, so that more people can be comfortable coming out of the shadows and seeking the help they need.

People with mental illnesses often say that there is nothing someone can do or say that could make them feel worse than they already do. No one asks ” Was this person always mentally ill?”.

People with mental health issues choose to hide their conditions because of the stigma related to illness making it remain as a taboo subject.

But by using and accepting these phrases in our everyday language, we trivialize the seriousness of mental health conditions. In California, a Rand Corporation recent study showed that every dollar invested in stigma reduction for mental health issues will return $36 in increased tax collections. It is just to expand the field; it is to include an awareness of the responsibilities of mental health practitioners to any mental health that is compromised.
