Foster Care fortnight started the same day, encouraging people in Wandsworth to consider fostering.
Around 340 children are looked after by North Yorkshire foster carers every year and to keep up with demand the County Council needs to recruit around 50 new fostering families in 2016.
If you are interested please call the council for a chat on 020 8708 7528 or come along to one of the fostering information sessions which are held throughout the year.
Anyone can enquire about becoming a foster carer, so long as they are over 21 and have a spare bedroom in their home.
A successful year in fostering has been celebrated in Cambridgeshire with the news that 22 new families began fostering in the region in the last year.
“We’re not saying fostering is easy, but it can be hugely rewarding and I would urge anyone considering fostering to meet the team and find out more”.
Support and training is offered by the council to help people with fostering, with allowances and fees to cover the financial cost involved.
She said: “Finding sufficient numbers of the right carers is a challenge faced by all fostering services”.
But more foster carers are needed, especially for teenagers, so the council is launching a major campaign to encourage people to come forward to foster teens.
A council spokeswoman said: “Whether you are single or married, black or white, same-sex or heterosexual we are asking potential carers from all walks of life to come forward and provide homes that will help change the lives of children in care for the better”.
There are many different types of fostering, including short term, permanent, emergency foster care, remand foster care, providing homes for siblings or even short breaks for parents of children with disabilities. But when I can see they are in a good place – happy and smiling and full of laughter… well, knowing you are making a difference is just priceless.
